Surviving Lockdown

Instead of worrying about what you cannot control, shift your energy to what you can create -Roy T Bennett

This is a difficult time for many of us. Being in lockdown for the second time and having the normal pattern of our lives disrupted is not easy. While the rules don’t seem as stringent this time there is a feeling that this is lasting a much longer time than we were prepared for and it creates a sense of low /flat mood, pessimism and in severe cases can make us feel depressed and low. That sense of hopelessness can turn into unhealthy behaviours meaning we don’t take care of ourselves as well as we should. For some it has been a very lonely time and for others it has made them feel extremely worried and anxious, not only for themselves and their loved ones. Some are struggling through this situation with added burdens such as bereavement, ill health, isolation, not being able to visit our closest family, key workers who are stressed and exhausted.

Try not to worry about things we have no control over. Do your best and try not to watch too much news or get involved in negative social media. Don’t neglect your physical or mental health. Sometimes we pretend that we are coping when we are not. If you feel that you need to talk please make sure you reach out and seek help. Talking to someone you trust, a friend or family member is a good starting place.

• If you feel you need help reach out for help as early as possible. Don’t wait until things get really bad or out of control. There is always someone to talk to.

• Make sure you try and put some structure into your day. That will be different for all of us but try and stick to your normal time routines ie try and keep to times you would usually go to bed and wake up. Eating and sleeping properly are key to good physical and mental health.

• Stay connected with friends, family and work colleagues in whatever way you can. Even if you are just keeping in regular phone contact.
